Rene Laloux's mesmerizing psychedelic sci-fi masterpiece won a price at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival and has been praised as a landmark of Eurpean animation.

Based on a novel by Czech fantasist Stefan Wul, Fantastic Planet is set on a distant planet in an unknown time where humans live in fear of the Draags, blue-skinned, red-eyed creatures standing over 40 feet tall. When a Draag child casually kills a human mother with a flick of her finger, she makes amends by adopting the dead woman's child as a pet. However, the new pet quickly figures out the secret of Draag brainpower and escapes to share his knowledge with a band of humans. Together, the humans make plans to bring down the reign of the Draags. In marked contrast to American animation, Laloux's most revered work offers a serious, insightful messge wrapped up in a colorful artistic style.
